Blackberry 552 Error
After installing a new app tonight, I started getting out of memory errors on my Blackberry Tour. My first inclination was to reboot, so I did. Sadly, when the device tried to reboot, I got the 552 Error: Reload OS.
I Googled (naturally,) and found noting regarding how to handle this situation on a Mac. Every document I found focused on the PC/Blackberry combo. So, for future reference, here’s how it played out on my Mac:
Mac: 13“ MacBook (Late 2009)
OSX: Snow Leopard
Blackberry Desktop Manager (Mac): 1.02 Build 8
Blackberry: Sprint Blackberry Tour
I attached the BB to the Mac via USB cable, and BDM opened. BDM tried to connect, message said ”waiting for device to initialize“.
Left the BB plugged in while I Googled for a solution.
After 5 or 10 minutes, the BB screen went black, BDM popped to the front of my screen, and I got a message saying I needed to load the OS on the device. I had the option of 4.7.something, or an older version. I chose 4.7.x, and let it do it’s thing.
It went though the steps of reinstalling the OS, and 10-15 long, tense minutes later, I’m staring at a freshly installed BB OS. Unfortunately, I ignored my own advice, so I don’t have a backup. But at least the BB is up and running again.
So...
1.) Make sure you have BDM for Mac installed
2.) Plug it in via USB
3.) Wait
4.) Wait some more
5.) When you finally get the option to reload the OS, do it.
6.) Wait even longer
7.) When it’s finally finished, restore from your backup, or start reloading your apps from scratch.
Hope this helps somebody. This is the second time I’ve bricked this Tour. The first time I actually had access to a PC running Windows, but it seemed far more complicated to get the BB restored. Maybe because I never found a document telling me to just plug it in to the computer and WAIT. I lack technological patience.
Now I know. (And now you do, too.)
