Restoring the Blackberry

After reinstalling BB OS 4.7, I had to start from scratch... -- Setup from fresh install of BB OS Configure mail Resend service books from BIS site Install: Lexulous (from App World after login--allows for downloading of previously purchased apps) Install: Google Mobile App Install: Google Maps Configure: Google Latitude Install: Google Sync Configure: Google Sync
  • Sync Contacts
  • Sync main calendar
  • Sync all other calendars
Install from BDM
  • Tasks
  • Memo Pad
  • Texas Hold ‘em
  • Blackberry Messenger
  • Blackberry Application Center
Reboot (Automated) Sync: Notes Sync: Tasks Install: Blackberry Messenger (v5) Reboot Restore BBM contact list from cloud (it restored an old list...) Add additional contacts to BBM Install: Reardon Mobile Assistant Install: Facebook Install: Flickr Configure: Facebook Configure: Flickr Configure: Camera (image stabilization on, geotagging on) Configure: Browser Install: MilkSync Install: Movies Install: WeatherEye Install: Seesmic Install: Evernote Install: SugarSync Install: Yelp Install: Foursquare Configure: SugarSync Configure: Foursquare Configure: Evernote Configure: MilkSync Configure: WeatherEye Configure: Seesmic Backup Backup BBM to cloud and SD card (after re-invited contacts accepted) Install: KeePassBB Delete: Password Safe Reboot -- That’s pretty much my basic configuration for my BBs. It’s entirely possible that I forgot something, and will remember an install later, but at least now I have a good backup from which I can restore if I brick it again.

Blackberry 552 Error

After installing a new app tonight, I started getting out of memory errors on my Blackberry Tour. My first inclination was to reboot, so I did. Sadly, when the device tried to reboot, I got the 552 Error: Reload OS. I Googled (naturally,) and found noting regarding how to handle this situation on a Mac. Every document I found focused on the PC/Blackberry combo. So, for future reference, here’s how it played out on my Mac: Mac: 13“ MacBook (Late 2009) OSX: Snow Leopard Blackberry Desktop Manager (Mac): 1.02 Build 8 Blackberry: Sprint Blackberry Tour I attached the BB to the Mac via USB cable, and BDM opened. BDM tried to connect, message said ”waiting for device to initialize“. Left the BB plugged in while I Googled for a solution. After 5 or 10 minutes, the BB screen went black, BDM popped to the front of my screen, and I got a message saying I needed to load the OS on the device. I had the option of 4.7.something, or an older version. I chose 4.7.x, and let it do it’s thing.

It went though the steps of reinstalling the OS, and 10-15 long, tense minutes later, I’m staring at a freshly installed BB OS. Unfortunately, I ignored my own advice, so I don’t have a backup. But at least the BB is up and running again. So... 1.) Make sure you have BDM for Mac installed 2.) Plug it in via USB 3.) Wait 4.) Wait some more 5.) When you finally get the option to reload the OS, do it. 6.) Wait even longer 7.) When it’s finally finished, restore from your backup, or start reloading your apps from scratch. Hope this helps somebody. This is the second time I’ve bricked this Tour. The first time I actually had access to a PC running Windows, but it seemed far more complicated to get the BB restored. Maybe because I never found a document telling me to just plug it in to the computer and WAIT. I lack technological patience. Now I know. (And now you do, too.)

MacJournal

Decided to try out MacJournal as a method of posting to my blog. I really need to start writing again, but my biggest block is using the web interface for WordPress. It’s a great interface, but I prefer to edit locally. So, we’ll see how it goes.

Years ago in Montana, my friends tried to get me to go folfing with them. I never did.

So a few days ago, when my buddy here in Portland asked me to go, I figured I should probably check it out. I officially suck at it, but have discovered that I really like to play. It's free, simple, and doesn't take much time to finish a around.

I'm not giving up regular golf, but I'll definitely be spending some time at the various disc golf courses around Portland.

WordPress For iPhone/iPod Touch

Just installed the latest version of WordPress for my iPod Touch. Seems more stable, otherwise it doesn't look much different. On a sidenote, the update for Facebook on iPhone adds contact sync and push notifications. Finally. I've been able to sync contacts with Facebook on the Blackberry, Palm Pre, and Android. 'Bout time the iPhone app joined the party. Maybe I'll start blogging more...
